Back in November, we kicked off what we think is the coolest contest we’ve had on Bowties & Boatshoes to date, five lucky readers were going to get the chance to design a Hudson Sutler commuter duffel, and one would have theirs put into production. Well, today’s the today that we finally get to reveal what the five randomly selected finalists came up with. To say we are impressed would be an understatement, and we will absolutely be purchasing whichever bag is selected as the winner. In a world that is dominated by the digital, we’re making our best effort to work a little bit more analog into our daily lives. Luckily for us, there are a number of great brands out there that can help facilitate these efforts with ease. One of which is Field Notes, and their “Kit” is the perfect way for us to make sure we have everything we need to get back to basics. We originally posted about “The Kit” back in December of 2011, and with the New Year upon us it is time for a re-up. Not only do we need the new calendar, our other notebooks are just about full as well! The post below originally ran on December 17, 2011, and this year’s kit remains virtually unchanged.

Just like bowties, we wear neckties just as often casually as we do formally. Of course, we like to go with options that are a bit different than your standard silk, and for those times when we are looking to experiment a bit The Tie Bar is normally our first stop. We resisted as long as we could (not sure why to be honest), but we have finally joined the world of knit tie wearers. Whether you are yet to take the plunge, or you did long ago, we think you’ll like the School Stripe Knit Ties from The Tie Bar.

For the first time since we were in school, we actually took the entire week between Christmas and New Years’ off to unwind and recharge our batteries for what is already shaping up to be one heck of a year. While it was definitely nice to take some time away from the hustle of everyday life, we’re glad to be back to the grind today. Though we wouldn’t call it a resolution, this year we’re going to make a conscious effort to upgrade some of the basics in our wardrobe, the pieces that will literally never be out of style. First up is the basic white dress shirt. Out with the old and in with the White Fine Twill from our friends at Ledbury.
Whether you are happy to see 2012 go, or looking forward to carrying her momentum into 2013, here’s to hoping this year is your best one yet.

If you follow us on Twitter, you know that we’re winding down 2012 in the mountains of NC. As much as we love being on the water, we sure could get used waking up overlooking the hills and river every morning. That being said, it’s pretty darn cold up here and we weren’t quite as prepared as we should have been. Why classic Woolrich Original Buffalo Check Wool Shirt wasn’t on our packing list we’ll never know.

It’s hard to believe that today is the final Bowtie Friday of the year. We’ve had quite the wild ride this year, and cannot wait to see what 2013 has in store for us both personally and professionally. Originally, our plan was to go back through this year’s Bowtie Friday posts and revisit our absolute favorite bow to cap off the year. Turns out that is easier said than done with so many great options, so we’re going to go a little rogue today and pick a pair of pants to cap off a year of Bowtie Friday posts. Not just any pants mind you, they are the Clark Vintage Bow Tie Embroidered Chinos from Brooks Brothers.

Have you ever driven by a place time and time again, and constantly thought to yourself “Man, I should stop in there sometime”? Well, we have two words for you: do it! In the worst case, you’ll spend a few minutes poking around and realizing you haven’t been missing much. Best case, you’ll find a store that is truly a hidden gem. Luckily for us, the latter happened on Christmas Eve when we were wrapping up a few last minute errands. Little did we know that tucked right next to one of our favorite BBQ shacks sat a treasure trove stacked floor to ceiling with the likes of Barbour, Filson, and Woolrich. One thing that we haven’t stopped thinking about since that visit was a fantastic Wool Blazer by Filson.
