Father’s Day gift ideas

On June 18, 2011, in Uncategorized, by Ryan & Ben

Tomorrow marks a first for both Bows & Boats founders.  It will be the first time that each of us celebrates Father’s day as a father.  While it still seems a bit surreal to think that we are not only going to be celebrating with our Dads, but also being celebrated, we are definitely looking forward to the occasion.  Now that we have seen first hand what it takes to be a parent, it makes us appreciate our Dads even more.  If you haven’t picked up a gift for your Dad yet, take a look at the list below for a few things that won’t leave him disappointed.

Last Friday we talked about the #BowtieFriday movement on Twitter.  In only a weeks time, we have seen a huge uptick in the #BowtieFriday buzz and this Friday is sure to be the biggest yet.  Of course, with so many deciding to swim against the “casual Friday” stream, we felt that it was only right that we dedicate another Friday to a bowtie post.  This Friday’s bow comes from Bows & Boats founder Ben Meredith’s company,  Starboard Clothing Co.  Their recently released Classic Blue Seersucker Beau ($45) is sure to be an instant success.

Join or Die Pocket Tee by Buffalo and Company

On June 16, 2011, in Mens, Shirts, by Ryan & Ben

When it comes to the Revolutionary War, we all know the basics, the Declaration of Independence, Paul Revere’s ride, etc., they are part of the American psyche. Something that is not always remembered as clearly is the political upheaval that lead to the Declaration itself. As the we approach the 4th of July, the Join or Die Pocket Tee ($19.95) from Buffalo and Company is the perfect way to show off your American roots with an interesting twist.

Ladies V-neck by Otter Bay

On June 15, 2011, in Shirts, Womens, by Ryan & Ben

It is no secret that we are fans of a girl in a well fit polo shirt.  Unfortunately, if the polo doesn’t fit right the look is absolutely ruined.  While most girls we know embrace the classic look of a polo, there are a few that can’t get used to wearing something that is basically identical to a men’s “go to”.  If you are in the same boat, you will probably love the Ladies V-neck ($34.99) by Otter Bay.

Everett Sport Shirt by Jack Robie

On June 14, 2011, in Mens, Shirts, by Ryan & Ben

For years it seemed like the only brands that really pushed the fact that their products were “Made in the USA” were in the auto industry.  Luckily, the tag line has spread like wildfire to a number of new brands in the fashion world, and the quality of the products that are being turned out is certainly top notch.  Sure, it may be more cost effective to produce pieces abroad, but we are more than happy to pay a couple of extra dollars knowing that a garment was made right here at home.  One company that proudly touts their shirts as “Made in the USA” is Jack Robie, and their Everett Sport Shirt ($105) is a fantastic choice for any warm weather ensemble.

Miansia Bracelets for J. Crew

On June 13, 2011, in Accessories, Mens, by Ryan & Ben

When executed properly, we love when designers or artists take something that we see commonly and rework it into something that would have never crossed our mind.  Of course, there are many times when this just does not work.  A perfect example of a failure would be the meat dress Lady Gaga wore a while back.  A perfect example of success would be the Miansia Bracelets ($55 – $105) for J. Crew.

Five weeks ago, the Triple Crown kicked off with the Kentucky Derby and we featured the Mint Julep.  Three weeks ago, all eyes in the horse racing world were on the Preakness, and we featured the Black-Eyed Susan.  Well, the Triple Crown is coming to an end this afternoon with the Belmont Stakes, and we thought it was only fitting that we complete the trifecta of official Triple Crown cocktails by introducing you to the official cocktail of this year’s Belmont Stakes, the Belmont Jewel.

Bourbon & Cigars Beau by Southern Proper

On June 10, 2011, in Bowties, Events, Mens, by Ryan & Ben

If you follow us on Twitter, you have probably noticed a couple of things tagged #BowtieFriday.  #BowtieFriday began as an effort to buck the trend of casual Friday’s and has started to gain some traction.  This #BowtieFriday carries a bit more weight for us because our friends from The Quinntessential Gentleman are hosting their second annual Bourbon and Bowties event to raise money for a local Baltimore charity, The Living Classrooms.  Of course, attendees are encouraged to wear their favorite bow, and those who can’t attend, but want to show their support, are encouraged to do the same.  While there are sure to be a number of awesome ties in attendance, we can’t think of one more appropriate than the Bourbon and Cigars Beau ($55) by Southern Proper.

Tumblers by Tervis

On June 9, 2011, in Uncategorized, by Ryan & Ben

For the past few days, temperatures here in Annapolis have been unseasonably warm.  Yes, it is almost summer, but when the thermometer hits 100º in early June we have to wonder what the middle of July is going to be like.  One thing that will always come in handy on a sweltering day is a cold drink.  Unfortunately, with temperatures this high, cold drinks don’t stay cold for long.  Unless, of course, your drink is in one of our most used warm weather accessories, a Tervis Tumbler ($11 – $20).

Mackworth Corduroy Shorts by L.L. Bean Signature

On June 8, 2011, in Mens, Shorts, by Ryan & Ben

As much as we look forward to breaking out our spring and summer wardrobe, there is a small part of us that hates to put away the heavy sweaters, the corduroys, and our favorite wool pants for the season.  Normally, the regret doesn’t really hit until the first chilly day that we go looking for an old favorite only to realize that it has been boxed.  While summer weight wools and sweaters are easy to find, it tends to be bit harder to work corduroy into your summer rotation.  Luckily, we found the Mackworth Corduroy Shorts ($79) by L.L. Bean Signature.
