Even though the sun is dropping before most of us leave the office these days, there is never a good excuse to have a bad looking pair of sunglasses. The epitome of a functional accessory, sunglasses can very easily make or break a look. There are some great modern frames out there, but one of our favorites, the Ray-Ban Wayfarer, dates back to 1952.
Though we love the tried and true classics, every once in a while someone comes up with a modern spin on an old favorite that catches our attention. These modern twists can be polarizing to say the least. This year, Sperry has collaborated with Scott Sternberg from Band of Outsiders on 3 different silhouettes, the Men’s 3 Eye Boat, the Chukka, and the Reconstructed Penny Loafer. By using a number of different fabrics and textures on some of our favorite shoes, Sperry and Scott have definitely succeeded in polarizing the team here at Bows & Boats.
There isn’t much better than waking up on a Saturday morning, throwing on your favorite tee shirt, and heading out to enjoy the weekend. Of course, we all have a few tee shirts that have probably been in the rotation a few years too long. At the same time, how can we possibly get rid of the first tee shirt of our college experience? Easy, replace it with a Sweet Tee ($25) from our friends over at Southern Proper.
Just like every guy needs a simple Cotton Crewneck Sweater, every girl needs a simple cardigan. For a day at the office, or a weekend shopping excursion with friends, a simple cardigan works well in terms of both fashion and function. Though we primarily visit J. Crew for chinos and other staples, it is hard to miss their display of Jackie Cardigans ($62) with each new season.

Let’s face it, we all have that friend who has been in love with the same goofy novelty tie since their high school homecoming dance. For whatever reason this friend seems to think that because the novelty tie is old that it is therefore acceptable for any occasion. For the rest of us, who realize that there is no place for Mickey Mouse on a tie (unless you work for Disney), there are plenty of choices that will provide a simple look while still having a little fun. Since 1998 the Shep and Ian over at Vineyard Vines have been producing ties that do just that.
As the temperature drops and socks come back into play, it’s important to figure out what your shoe options will be once you have to pack away your Rainbows for the winter and boatshoes just aren’t an option. One of our favorite cold weather options at Bows & Boats is a clean pair of Wallabee Boots ($120) from Clarks.
There is nobody we know that can accessorize better than an East Coast Preppy girl. They always know just the right pieces to complete an outfit. That being said, it only made sense that our first entry geared directly towards our female audience cover one of our favorite accessories, the headband. Our suggestion? The many headband choices from High Cotton Ties ($20). Even though their primary product line is made up of 100% Cotton Bow Ties (We’re hoping to get the opportunity to take a look at some soon), these headbands are sure to be a big seller.
About a month ago one of our founders, Ben, had the good fortune to run across the website of a small South Carolina company called The Cordial Churchman. We have been obsessed ever since. In June of 2009, The Cordial Churchman came to life when Ellie Laveer began making bowties after she had some seersucker fabric leftover from a coverall outfit she was making for her son. Encouraged by her husband, Ellie has built a cottage empire that now provides bowties for people all over the country.
At Bows & Boats, we love to see young companies delivering new products that fit in seamlessly with our favorite classics. One such company, who has seen huge success in this department, is Smathers & Branson.
