With Memorial Day less than a week away, we are really looking forward to ringing in the Summer.  We’ll probably keep things low key this year, so our look for the day will follow suit.  If you’re looking for a little bit of inspiration, below is a peek at what we’ll probably break out for the occasion.

Bow’d Glory by Old Try and Bowties & Boatshoes

On May 19, 2014, in Contests, Home, by Ryan & Ben

Image: Old Try

Thanks to this website we’ve met some pretty great folks over the last couple of years, and two of the greatest are Micah and Marianna down at Old Try.  You’d be hard pressed to find better company, and we’re proud to call them friends.  Not only are they a great pair to share a couple of drinks with, the prints they’re turning out are pretty fantastic as well.  They decorate the walls of both of our homes, and we’re always looking forward to see what the next Old Try release will be.  Well folks, today we’re happy to announce that the latest Old Try print is one that has our name on it too!  To say we are proud to introduce “Bow’d Glory” would be quite the understatement.

To celebrate the Preakness, we had planned on featuring the recipe for the event’s “official” drink, a Black-Eyed Susan.  Unfortunately, the recipe has once again changed, and for something that is supposed to be a tradition it just sort of rubs us the wrong way.  So, instead of Black-Eyed Susans, this weekend we’re mixing up a Gin & Rudy or two.  Want the recipe?  Take a look at the feature below.  It originally ran on January 19, 2013.

Spring Four Way Bow by High Cotton

Sometimes you just have to break out some color for the sake of breaking out some color.  When we have one of those days, a head turning bowtie is normally our first course of action, and today’s pick definitely fits the bill.  It’s the Spring Four Way Bow  from High Cotton.

Red Feather Cabin by Kiel James Patrick

On May 15, 2014, in Shirts, by Ryan & Ben

We frequently wonder how brands come up with the names of their products.  One that never disappoints in that category is Kiel James Patrick.  If you follow the company’s namesake on various social media channels, you already know that his travels are quite extensive, and we have a feeling many of his products are named for places that he’s visited at one point or another.  For example, today’s featured item is a shirt that’s been dubbed Red Feather Cabin.

Image: Streaker Sports

For the last two years, Streaker Sports has offered a Summer Shortscription.  For the last two years, said Shortscription has sold out.  Today we’re happy to announce that we have, once again, teamed up with our friends at Streaker to give one lucky Bowties & Boatshoes reader a Shortscription of their own.

In our travels we come across a number of things that we are on the fence about featuring here on Bowties & Boatshoes.  Some we love, some we think our readers will love, and some we’re just not sure about.  The result is a series we’re going to trot out over the next few weeks that we’re calling “Offered for Discussion.”  Instead of just wondering what y’all would think about something that caught our eye, we’re going to ask.  So, leave us a comment, shoot us a tweet, or hit us up on Facebook and let us know your thoughts.  The first item Offered for Discussion is the Hawaiian Hat from Southern Proper.

Polos by Smathers & Branson

On May 12, 2014, in Shirts, by Ryan & Ben

In a market that is literally stocked with more polos than we can count, it’s tough for brands to make theirs stick out.  Think about it, just about every animal you can think of has been embroidered on the left chest of a polo shirt, along with about a million other logos.  Last year, the team at Smathers & Branson decided to expand their lineup to include this wardrobe staple.  Of course, instead of embroidering logos, they stuck with what they know, needlepoint.

From the Archives: GR1 by GORUCK

On May 10, 2014, in Bags, by Ryan & Ben

Image: GORUCK

This weekend we’re finally taking part in a Warrior Dash.  If things go according to plan, it’ll be the first step towards another adventure we’ve had our eyes on, the GORUCK challenge.  Until we feel like we’re ready to take that plunge, we’ll just keep enjoying the GR1 from GORUCK.  Ours hasn’t gotten quite as dirty as the one pictured, but we’ve definitely put it through the paces and it’s never let us down.  The feature below originally ran on August 1, 2012.

Batik Bows by Sid Mashburn

On May 9, 2014, in Bowties, by Ryan & Ben

Every season a new color or print that we haven’t seen in a while seems to pop up from multiple companies at the same time.  This season, it appears that batik is the print of choice.  Some companies are keeping it traditional, others are putting a more modern spin on it, and a few are just getting close and calling it batik for the sake of name recognition.  One company that did their batik right across a number of products is Sid Mashburn.  Of course, the Batik Bows are our favorite part of their batik collection.
