Did you really think we could make it through “Mountain Week” without talking about a solid pair of boots?  We have already profiled one pair of Maine Hunting Shoes by L.L. Bean (the waxed canvas version), but just like top-siders, it never hurts to have a couple of pairs on hand.  For times when you are sure to see low temperatures and lots of snow or slush, we recommend the Maine Hunting Shoes with Gore-Tex/Thinsulate Liners ($164).

This version of the Maine Hunting Shoe features a premium, pebbled leather, waterproof, upper and the ever present rubber lowers.  While the outer layers of the shoe will do a great job keeping your feet dry, it’s the boots’ inner liners that really set this pair apart.  Made of Gore-Tex, the liners are going to guarantee that any water that manages to find it’s way past the first lines of defense won’t make it any farther.  Paired with the Gore-Tex is 200 gram Thinsulate that basically turns the lining into a high quality ski jacket for your feet.  While many tweaks have been made to the Hunting Shoe since it’s first appearance nearly 100 years ago, every version on the market still maintains a classic look that will never go out of style.  Remember, these boots tend to run big, so you might want to size down unless you are planning on wearing extremely heavy socks every time you pull them on.
