As much as we put our own personal touches on each and every post on Bowties & Boatshoes, we do our best to leave our opinions on sports, politics, etc. at the door (or on Twitter). That said, with campaigns in full swing, we thought it was only right that we weigh in on our preferred method to show our support for those who are vying for office. Instead of bumper stickers and t-shirts, this year we are turning to our friends at Smathers & Branson for our campaign gear.
If the number of leaves falling is any indication of Fall being here to stay, we’ll be breaking out the heavy fabrics in no time at all. We’ve always loved tweed, and this year it might be time to break down and buy another blazer for the rotation. One that has really caught our attention as of late comes from the L.L. Bean Signature line. Their Wool Tweed Blazer ($245) is great looking and built to last.
We spend so much time looking at a screen, that leafing through a new magazine on a Saturday morning is something we really look forward to. A few Saturdays back, we finally got a chance to work our way through the inaugural issue of a magazine that our Twitter feed had been blowing up about for quite some time, SouthernLeague. Trust us, if you’re reading this post, you need to check them out ASAP.
About a year ago, during one of our regular visits to Back Down South, we read about a couple of guys who were planning to launch a bowtie line. One thing that stuck with us after the initial introduction was the fact that one of the founders said they wanted to make sure that their first “production run was to the standards of gentleman everywhere.” Well, a year later Brier and Moss is not only on the market, they’re flying high with a great lineup of bowties. Though we love the whole catalog, our favorite bows from the Brier and Moss line come from their Southern Stripes collection. If yours do too, keep reading, you just might win one.
For the first time in months, we could have legitimately left the house this morning with a sweater on and not felt out of place. Sure, we would have to shed it by lunchtime, but it’s nice to know we’ll be breaking out the trusty cable knits relatively soon. In the meantime, we’re looking to add a few sweaters to the rotation that are a bit more eye-catching. One that has really caught our attention is the Stripe Crew Neck ($98) by Tommy Hilfiger.
In the past week or so, we’ve gotten a number emails asking what we are planning on wearing once our boatshoes are retired for the season. We’re still holding off making the full transition for the time being, but there are a ton of fantastic options this year that we are really looking forward to trying out. One such option is the Emerson boot; a recent collaboration from Filson and Wolverine.
They say every generation has one event that you will never forget where you were or what you were doing when the news broke. For us, that event was September 11, 2001. Though we are more than a decade removed from that tragic day, we can both tell you literally exactly where we were and what we were doing when we found out our great nation was under attack. Though it’s still hard to think about calling this day anything other than “September 11th,” we’re making a conscious effort to embrace ‘Patriot Day’ this year, and moving forward. To each and every one of you who has ever put on a uniform of any sort to protect or serve the citizens of the United States, thank you. We’ll never, ever, be able to thank you enough for all that you have done.

For years, we’ve searched for flannel shirts that fit well. Sure, there have been a couple of winners from time to time, but more times than not we have ended up leaving stores disappointed in the lack of flannels that actually fit correctly. Needless to say, when we saw that our friends at Ratio Clothing were introducing flannel ($125) to their lineup this fall, we were pretty excited.
Everyone has to eat a little crow from time to time, and today it’s us. Just last week, we talked about retiring some of the brighter pants in our rotation for the season, and specifically mentioned that our yellow pants wouldn’t be seeing the light of day until Spring rolls around. Well, the lightweight yellow pants are still in storage, but, thanks to Brooks Brothers and their Slim Fit Five-Pocket Cords ($79.50), it looks like yellow pants are going to be in our Fall wardrobe after all.
Okay, we’ll admit it, we are still ridiculously excited that college football is here. So much so that we’re dedicating another Saturday post to some more of our favorite gameday essentials. This week our theme is the event that at times eclipses the game itself, the tailgate. Below you will find a few things that we always love to see when we roll in to any college town bright and early on a Saturday morning.
