Sperry Top-Siders

With literally hundreds of options on the market, a solid pair of boat shoes is something that should find its way into everyone’s closet. When we say everyone, we mean literally everyone. Men, women, children, it doesn’t matter.  A classic boat shoe should be found in your closet, period.  The “go to” boat shoe for the crew here at Bows & Boats is the king of all boat shoes, the classic Sperry Top-Sider. It’s a true classic that can be dressed up or dressed down to fit nearly any occasion.

Celebrating their 75th anniversary this year, Top-Siders were originally designed in 1935 by Paul Sperry. Sperry’s Top-Siders were basically the first of a genre. The new boat shoes were such a step forward when it came to on deck footwear that in 1939 the United States Navy commissioned massive quantities of Top-Siders for its sailors.

People may question the need for boat shoes if you don’t have a boat, but let’s face it, if you live on the East Coast (or at the very least want to look like you do) you probably know somebody who can get you out on the water from time to time.  While it is essential that everyone own a pair of these classics we must offer one word of warning: It is nearly impossible to keep a pair of boat shoes from smelling absolutely horendous after a few seasons of wear. Luckily, for about $85, you can have a brand new pair that will be broken in within a couple of days.  With the number of options available, even if you don’t like the “classic” Top-Sider, there is an option out there for you.  If you prefer another brand of boat shoes, we understand.  Just remember a few things: 1. No socks; 2. No black soles; 3. No complaining if they get wet.
