In the past we’ve featured the “official” Kentucky Derby mint julep recipe on race day.  This year, we’re changing things up a bit as we’ve become quite fond of Basil Hayden’s over the last year or so.  Our recipe is nothing fancy, but it’s our go to.  Of course, if you have a proper julep cup, now’s the time to break it out.

What you’ll need:

  • ~2 1/2 oz. of Basil Hayden’s Bourbon
  • 5-6 mint sprigs
  • 2 sugar cubes
  • Crushed ice

What to do with the ingredients:

1.  Place the leaves of 4-5 mint sprigs and your sugar cubes in the bottom of your cup. (If you don’t have a julep cup, a collins glass will work just fine.)

2.  Add just a splash of Basil Hayden’s

3.  Muddle the mint leaves and sugar cubes

4.  Add the rest of your bourbon

5.  Top off your glass with crushed ice

6.  Stir and garnish with your unused mint sprig.

Now that you have a classic julep in hand, place your bets and enjoy the races!
