A few weeks back we got an email from our friend Matt up in Marblehead, MA.  Matt’s been a loyal reader for quite some time, and he had recently come across a jacket that he thought was right up our alley.  Boy was he right.  Today, we’re proud to be the first to feature the Mariners Jacket from F.L. Woods.  A store that has been a constant in the Marblehead community for three quarters of a century, and one of those places that immediately landed on our “must visit” stores list as soon as we heard about it.

If you are a fan of Barbour, but have been looking for something that says “East Coast marina” instead of “English countryside”, your search is over.  Designed to celebrate the 75th anniversary of F.L. Woods, the Mariners Jacket pays homage not only to the store but also the man who started it.  Mr. Woods may have passed a few years, back, but his friend and neighbor Wayne George is doing one heck of a job carrying the F.L. Woods torch.

Made in the USA, and only available only in navy (with a few well placed hints of red), the Mariners jacket features a waxed cotton outer shell to protect you from Mother Nature and a gingham drill cloth lining that we absolutely love. Built not only to last, but to work, the jacket features a heavy duty brass zipper that is offset just slightly so when you decide to use the outer button closure it runs right up the middle.  To make sure things were functional, but not too bulky, action back shoulders were used to allow for a full range of motion.  Finished off with a quote and drawing from Mr. Woods himself on an inner patch pocket, the Mariner’s jacket is one of those pieces that has some history built in when you buy it, and just begs for you to make some more in it.  We certainly will be.
